The enormous Oosterdokseiland (ODE) project is taking shape at a unique location in Amsterdam, situated between the historic city centre and the wide IJ River.
Even for a city known for its ambition, this project is an unprecedented undertaking for Amsterdam in terms of both size and scope. MAB and its partners are developing over 200,000 square metres of modern architecture with a wealth of functions on the site of the former postal distribution centre.
When completed, the area will consist of residences and retail space as well as the Amsterdam conservatory, the new Amsterdam Public Library, a large hotel and conference centre, and the Asian trade centre. It forms an ideal and inspiring location for both national and international companies, and the project will have its own two-story parking garage and bicycle storage.
The architectural masterplan was devised with Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects and filled in by a multinational team of architects. With buildings ranging from 24 to 47 metres high, the radial structure of the area reflects that of the historic centre. Panoramic views over the water of the IJ add to the development’s immense appeal.
The location of the Oosterdokseiland (eastern docks island) is exceptionally accessible despite its inner city positioning. Just five minutes from the A10 ring road, the complex is in walking distance of the central rail station and a mere twenty minutes from Schiphol International Airport.
