In the summer of 2006 the skyline of Zwolle was lit up by the highest building this city in the north-east of the Netherlands has ever seen.

MAB Development realised the 96-metre IJsseltoren office complex in Zwolle’s Voorsterpoort business district. This imposing building houses the headquarters of banking concern ABN-AMRO along with various other companies.

Designed by René Steevensz of PPKS Architects from Chicago, the key philosophy behind this project was to combine business, social opportunities and relaxation. This reflects the fact that many people who work in such environments also tend to socialise and play sports with each other. PPKS Architects also designed the interior of the IJsseltoren complex to create office surroundings with a maximum open character.

The tower of the complex consists of two parts seemingly pushed together - one made of glass, the other of granite. Two lower granite buildings with six and four floors respectively are situated at an angle from the main tower. Below, an open square known as the concourse is home to diverse public facilities and connects the various parts of the complex.

One of the priorities during construction of the location was to create a sustainable, energy-efficient building. As a result the IJsseltoren complex includes under-floor heat storage and low-consumption lighting. The green and water-rich surroundings also reflect the eco-friendly style.
