In a textbook example of how to combine new structures and facilities with renovated historical buildings, MAB has brought new élan to the heart of The Hague city centre.
This mammoth MAB project, spread over multiple locations and a number of years, was designed to give fresh impetus to the entire city centre of The Hague. This project included the transformation of the Groenmarkt, renovating the Berlage Building, upgrading the Casa Uccellini complex, and redeveloping the De Drie Hoekjes apartment block.
With its multicoloured brick columns and glazed clay tile roof, the new Groenmarkt development pays respect to its historical surroundings while linking the different shopping areas that converge on this dynamic part of the city. Nicknamed 'The Sweet Jar', the new extension comprises space for shops, storage facilities and a bicycle park. The old ground floor of the original building is still popular for weddings. Its basement is used for catering events, while offices have been created on the various floors.
Located on nearby Kerkplein, the famous Berlage Building was built in 1895 and is an architectural anchor point in the city. The upgrade took this fully into account, adding shops to two floors and offices throughout the building. Great care was also taken with the construction of the adjacent new De Drie Hoekjes complex, which contains shops, apartments and parking facilities.
The final part of this four-apart masterpiece is on the other side of the Groenmarkt, on Grote Halstraat. The mixed-use redevelopment of the Casa Uccellini (Bird House) comprises apartments, penthouses and office & retail space. Since opening in 2002, this building has become a firm favourite among by residents and visitors alike.
