Located by the former departure point of the Holland-America line, from where many thousands of Europeans emigrated in decades past, De Rotterdam will form an integral part of the regeneration of the ‘Kop van Zuid’ residential and commercial area in Rotterdam.

Designed by world-renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, the name of the building - De Rotterdam - recalls the maritime history of the area where it is located, between the KPN Tower and the cruise ship terminal on the Wilhelmina Pier. With a combined space of 160,000 square metres, the three multifunctional towers accommodate functions that create a synergetic use of the different facilities by the various occupants. These include fitness, conference and hospitality facilities in the hotel.

MAB is working with the Rotterdam-based Office for Metropolitan Architecture on this multifunctional project. Taking the mixed use as the basis, they have developed a striking architectural concept of 150 metres high, nicknamed the ‘vertical city’. The ground floor of De Rotterdam is mainly devoted to public facilities, with a large public lobby that can serve as a general traffic hub for all users of the building. De Rotterdam also includes apartments, a cinema, offices and a hotel.

The overall result of this ambitious undertaking is that the Wilhelmina Pier will become a genuine city centre location, with a host of amenities ensuring that something is happening at all times of the day. And the De Rotterdam building itself will become a new icon for an iconic city.
