Three into one does go. Realised via a phased approach, the enormous Alexandrium project more than trebled the existing shopping space. Three different retail concepts were created within one unified complex.
In terms of both its size and structure, Alexandrium was a unique project for MAB Development. Taking close to a decade of phased development and completed in 2002, over 100,000 m² of shopping space was added to the area around the existing Oosterhof shopping centre in Rotterdam. The development consists of three different types of shopping centres around a new public space, with nearby bus, metro, mainline railway stations and direct access to the motorway.
Alexandrium I (The Shopping Centre) involved a complete metamorphosis of the existing Oosterhof retail zone. As part of our detailed preparations and design, we ensured that the shops could mostly continue their business during the construction. Additional retail space was complemented by new restaurants, apartments and commercial services, plus an extension and renovation of the car park and a large public square
Alexandrium II – known as The Arc - consists of two building layers designated for mega stores, divided into 16 large units. Last but by no means least, Alexandrium III was a real trendsetter - the first shopping centre in the Netherlands to be exclusively devoted to home furnishings. It comprises three building layers divided by an atrium. A terminal roof on top of the atrium provides access to the building for the car park on top.
