MAB took the initiative for this extensive redevelopment, which has brought a once popular and always essential shopping centre back to bustling life.
The Hasselo project forms the commercial centre of the Hasseler Es neighbourhood in Hengelo, a city in the east of the Netherlands. Originally built 35 years ago, the shopping centre had lost its appeal and was in serious need of renovation. MAB developed a regeneration plan to give the shopping mall new élan, and to ensure that its social function was taken fully into account. The fruits of this carefully considered work have been enjoyed ever since the Hasselo reopened in 2006.
While the outside of the shopping centre was freshened up, the inside was completely renewed including new ceilings and lighting. A new routing was implemented and the floor space of the individual shops extended. Overall, the size of the retail offering was increased by almost half and there are now 38 shops available.
An extensive overhaul of the residential accommodation was also carried out. Some of the existing apartments were demolished as MAB created a new apartment block above the stores. A car park was also added.
All of the above was achieved without having to close the existing outlets, which would have had a profound impact on local residents. This involved a smart logistical plan, which MAB designed in close cooperation with shop owners and the local retail association. This successful modus operandi helped ensure that almost all the original shop tenants renewed their contracts post-development.
