Vathorst is a ‘new town development within a town’, and MAB is responsible for significant features such as the shopping centre.
Nestled in the centre of the Netherlands, Amersfoort is one of the cities benefiting from residential developments known in Holland as Vinex locations. The new Vathorst neighbourhood is to the north of the city and named after a characteristic ancient farmhouse. By 2010 some 30,000 people are expected to live in an area with a diverse identity all of its own.
MAB’s role is to create a multi-purpose shopping centre area including residential, commercial and cultural space within an open atmosphere. The public space has been designed with warm, natural colours to enhance the vibrant character of the neighbourhood. Situated along a boulevard nearby the new Amersfoort Vathorst railway station, this district centre is being developed in two phases.
The first phase was completed at the end of 2008 and included five buildings with apartments and shops that meet the daily requirements of residents. The second phase is slated for delivery in 2013. The Vathorst shopping centre buildings have been designed by three architects: Attika (Amsterdam), Dok (Amsterdam) and Jo Crepain (Antwerp).
As well as homes, retail space and parking facilities, MAB is developing an ‘ICO cluster’, consisting of information, cultural and educational facilities developed by Amersfoort Council.
