As Hamburg enjoys a growth spurt, the inner city is getting its harbour back. For centuries the city ran all the way down to the banks of the Elbe but as Hamburg became Germany’s largest seaport, this aspect of industry dominated the area. Now the new Überseequartier (Overseas Quarter) is turning back the tide of history and adding almost eight hectares to the Hamburg City area.
Construction on this two-phase project got underway in 2007 and is expected to last until 2012. Sixteen new buildings will open up new perspectives in a fresh city space, while the area’s rich history will be apparent in characteristic landmarks and architecture. One of the key elements of the new neighbourhood will be a boulevard running from north to south between the former dock warehouses and the water.
The mixed-use concept combines living, working and trading in close vicinity to each other. Exclusive shops and gastronomic restaurants will be found on the ground-floor level, with first class apartments and a wealth of office space located above.
Another major highlight will be a five-star hotel with integrated cruise terminal directly on the Elbe. A science centre and aquarium next door will be a key attraction to the many international visitors who come onshore here.
