Next phase started in construction of Oosterdokseiland project
On 14 January MAB Development started construction of the second lot on the island, which will house 12,500 m2 of office space, 83 apartments and a large food plaza including a supermarket. The strategic location in the centre of Amsterdam will eventually consist of a total of 80,000 m2 of office space, making it the largest office location in this area of the city.
ODE will offer a wide variety of facilities including bars, restaurants, hotels, shops, and the new Amsterdam Public Library (OBA) and Conservatory. “The diversity and central location next to Amsterdam’s primary rail station will generate an inner urban dynamic with a creative and informal character,” says Cees van Boven, Director of MAB Development Nederland. “The new neighbourhood is unique in its combination of inner-city living and working in an exceptionally pleasant atmosphere.”
The vitality of the island location is attracting a number of trendy companies including TomTom and Vodafone Nederland. “Our new offices will allow us to fully realise our ‘mobile workspace’ philosophy,” comments Jens Schulte-Bockum, CEO at Vodafone Nederland. “The Oosterdokseiland location offers all the qualities to match: An inspiring working environment in the city centre, excellent accessibility by public transport, sustainability and the option for a flexible layout. These are all attributes that match the Vodaphone brand.”
These features will also characterise future projects adds Van Boven of MAB Development. “In good weather ODE offers office personnel an opportunity to work outside and enjoy panoramic views over the water. There is also the chance to enjoy a lunch concert in the Conservatory or let their agenda decide whether to take the train or car to work. Today’s employees greatly value this type of flexibility.”
Enhancing the city centre
Maarten van Poelgeest, Amsterdam’s Alderman of Spatial Planning, underlines the importance of the Zuidelijke IJoever project and particularly the Oosterdokseiland to Amsterdam: “The island can accommodate major businesses and institutions that are interested in settling in the city centre. We are very pleased with Vodafone’s move to Amsterdam and looking forward to the completion of the apartments. Moreover, the location offers an opportunity to companies and organisations that are already located in the city centre but need more space, such as the Conservatory and the Public Library. The mix of residences, working, culture and entertainment guarantee an inner-city spirit that will integrate the Oosterdokseiland with the historic centre.”
Living
ODE also offers a great place for people looking to live in an urban environment, with a total of 305 apartments offering views either over the water or the historic city centre. Lot 2 will include 48 private apartments offering view over the water and 30 council rent apartments facing the historic city centre of Amsterdam.
